Posted March 22, 2012:Teeth Whitening: Top 4 Questions Answered

How Does Bleaching Work?

The whitening agents we use contain peroxide. This chemical passes into the tooth and breaks down molecules that cause your teeth to become discolored. Although the tooth structure itself doesn’t change, the entire tooth is lightened. Since this is a chemical process with the tooth, prior restorations such as fillings and crowns will not be affected or lightened, only natural tooth structure.

Will Bleaching Weaken My Teeth?

No it does not!

Will Bleaching Cause My Teeth to Become Sensitive?

Although temporary, sensitivity is a common side effect of bleaching. If sensitivity does occur, it usually lasts only as long as the bleaching treatment or occasionally throughout the rest of that day.

How Long Will It Last?

Everyone’s mouth is different. Although bleaching results are stable, nutrition and lifestyle habits can create the need for bleaching to be done periodically. Things such as drinking coffee, tea, or red wine, eating chocolate, smoking and just plain aging can all be factors in how long the bleaching will last. It varies, but you can whiten conveniently in your home with custom fit whitening trays.
